A short note on the plight of the Maui's Dolphin.

Hi eager reader! Thanks for stopping by, my name is Matthew and this is my website.

You may know that the minister for fisheries in the New Zealand government, Jim Anderton has recently proposed changes to the law with regard to fisheries practices in areas populated by both Maui's and Hector's Dolphins.

This has been a very long time coming.

In his wisdom Mr Anderton has tried to find a middle ground between the Fishing Industry, the Government and it's income, and conservation groups.

In trying for a balanced approach Mr Anderton has of course failed to please anyone.

But on a sadder note he has completely left out the only group directly affected, the Maui's themselves. It's easy to accuse him of doing this, since he is a politician and more concerned by how people perceive him. There are simply more people wanting to fish than to save the Maui's and the Hector's Dolphin from extinction.

So it has to be said that the Dolphins are not getting much out of the deal.

I do hope that the small concession Mr Anderton is proposing to enforce on the fishing industry and on amateur fishers will help the Dolphins.

But he has allocated them only a very small sanctuary area, far below the area of ocean which Maui's and Hectors need to use to survive. Besides which it is not easy to explain to animals that they will not be safe outside a particular area set aside for them.

That said I do hope that the public awareness for these amazing Dolphins increases.

At least it might make a few people think, and it might even make them do something, or tell other people.

If you'd like to know more about these animals and how you can help please visit the WWF website. If you go through the conservation related links I have listed on the right you can learn more on the situation.

Thanks for visiting and I hope you enjoy the website.

Matt.
